Finishing is Better than Starting

StartLine

One of my desires is to run my race with joy.

Regardless of good intentions, it’s easy to slip into grumbling and complaining without even realizing it. We fuss about the finances or lack of time to accomplish our goals. Then we justify our complaining by trying to cover it up with “faith” and “prayer” when in reality we’re only fooling ourselves–and hindering the plan of God because of the murmuring of our heart.

Don’t believe me?

Check out the story of the children of Israel in the wilderness. The Bible says, “It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea. Now it came to pass in the 40th year… Moses spoke to the children of Israel…” (Deuteronomy 1:2-3). Forty years after they left Egypt, the Israelites are still on the journey that was only supposed to take 11 days!

Why? Because they murmured and complained about every little thing. The whole congregation complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt…!” (Exodus 16:3).

Don’t judge them. You and I have done the exact same thing!

Yesterday, we celebrated the start of a new year. Woohoo! And then barely 24 hours later, we’re complaining about having to go back to work, cleaning the house, tackling the projects we didn’t finish over the holiday, etc., etc., etc.

The wise writer of Ecclesiastes said it best: “Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride” (7:8).

Other translations read: “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning of it, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit” (Amplified). “Endings are better than beginnings. Sticking to it is better than standing out” (Message).

One thing I don’t lack is persistence. When I start something, I will finish it. If I promise to complete a task every week at the same time, you can count on it getting done. BUT… sadly, I haven’t always done it with joy. If my lips aren’t grumbling under the pressure, my body language might be. And I don’t like that weakness in my life, so I’ve got a new determination to run my race with joy this year.

No matter what comes my way, or how tempted I am under the pressure, I am determined to have the same testimony as the Apostle Paul, who said, “None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God” (Acts 20:24).

In other words, “My life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus…” –IN JOY!

Remember this truth: How can we testify of His grace in our life unless we operate in it every day when we’re tempted to do otherwise?

So the goal is not in how we start our new year, but how we run the race. Let’s keep our eye on the prize. The end of a thing is better than its beginning.

You can do it Jackie! You’ve set your eye on the goal. Now all that’s required is one day at a time :)

I will try each day to be happy and have joy in all I am able to do, physically, emotionally, spiritually. Thank you Daphne.

Nehemiah 8:10 is one of my my life time verses. It reminds me that, “The JOY of the Lord is my strength.” Note that it’s HIS joy, not my strummed up wishy washy version. I find when I’m as joyful as a limp dishrag, that it helps to sing hymns of joy … and allow the Spirit of God to fill me up with His joy. IT is my strength, and I can’t tackle any task without it.

amen June! I know a minister who always has people repeat after him: “ha.ha.ha.” He says it doesn’t matter if you “felt” like laughing or not, anything we release from our mouth has the power to change us and the atmosphere around. He’s so right! In the face of the “blahs” you can sing or speak out God’s Word or just a simple “ha.ha.ha.” and if you stick with it, things begin improving!

Oh Daphne! The word bittersweet won’t work for this…but how about Ouch & Hallelujah!! (Ouch-elujah???)
I’m not really a complainer…..but I’m a starter! And like you, I’m actually very persistent too! Except I’m persistent in starting things, not in finishing them. My life and my mind are filled with projects and ideas I’ve started. Some of them are little & some are big. And honestly, I think they’re all good things. But…most of them aren’t finished. There’s the Ouch!
And now the Hallelujah…everytime I experience an ouch God sends His Word to change things and make it better. And He’s done it again with your post today!! So while you run your race with JOY in 2013 I’m determined to FINISH the work God has already given me before I start anything new on my own!!
I’ve been praying about this a lot in the last few months & God has certainly shown me His sense of humor in the some of the ways He’s been answering! I guess you could say the JOY of the Lord IS my strength!!!

Set-backs, near misses and presumed delays, have worn down the saints and the bible clearly tells us that this is an end time enemy tactic to prevent our victories or derail us altogether. We must not fall for these illusions and finish our course with magnificent endurance. The tortoise and the hare are a great example of moving forward NOT in fits and starts but …
consistent and steady wins. Our best days are indeed ahead! Thanks for the very necessary reminder!

I like your example of the tortoise and the hare… perfect. Our best days ARE ahead!

That is so good Ms Daphne! Something to keep before us all the time so when we do slip we will see it and yank ourselves back up. I am going to share this with my faith friends and ask them to hold me accountable to running my race with JOY, no matter what may show up in my path. I don’t want it to take me 40 years to accomplish what God intended to take only 11 days. That means I will miss out on the other things God has for me to accomplish – how sad is that.

very sad indeed… I like what you said about being held accountable. I think I’ll do the same!
